About us

Family-run since 2004, in the heart of Bedfordshire

We supply, deliver, service and repair mobility scooters, powerchairs, wheelchairs and walking aids from our showroom on Broadmead Business Park in Stewartby, for customers across Bedford and the surrounding villages.

Most of what we do isn’t selling. It’s the servicing, the repairs, the battery that died on a Friday, the loan scooter so somebody isn’t stuck indoors for a week. That’s the part people come back for.

Our story

A shed at a garden centre, in 2004

The Mobility Centre started in 2004, when Richard and his dad set up in a shed at Staples garden centre. It was a small beginning, and the idea behind it has not changed since: sell people the right thing, look after them properly afterwards, and treat everyone who comes through the door as though they were family.

In 2012 the business moved to Kempston. Today it is at Broadmead Business Park in Stewartby — a proper showroom with a workshop behind it and free parking at the door, but still family-run, and still small enough that the person who sold you your scooter is usually the person who services it.

Most of what we do is not selling. It is the servicing, the repairs, the loan scooter when yours is in for a week. That is the part of the job we take most pride in, and it is the part people come back for.

The team

Who you will meet

A small team, most of whom have been here a long time. That matters more than it sounds: the person you speak to on the phone will know your machine, because they have probably worked on it.

How we work

What is it like to buy from us?

The things we’d want if it were our family buying.

  • Free home demonstration

On every mobility scooter and powerchair we sell, Motability or not. It answers the doorway question, the gate question and the storage question in one visit.

  • We service every make

Not just what we sell. If you bought it elsewhere and it's stopped working, we'll still look at it.

  • Pickup and return

We collect your machine, work through a full service test sheet, test the batteries and bring it back to you.

  • A loan scooter where we can

Subject to availability — but being without your scooter for a week isn't a small inconvenience, and we treat it that way.

  • No-pressure advice

Come and try things. Ask questions. Go away and think about it. Nobody here works on commission-driven pressure.

  • Accredited Motability dealer

Including a free home assessment where the scheme criteria are met, and we handle the paperwork with you.

Three good reasons

Why buy from a showroom rather than a website

You can sit in it first

A photograph cannot tell you whether a seat suits your back, whether you can reach the tiller comfortably, or whether you can get on and off it without help. Twenty minutes in the showroom answers all three.

Somebody local fixes it

Every machine needs a service eventually, and some need a repair at an awkward moment. We have our own workshop and our own engineers, eight miles from most of the places we deliver to.

Nobody here works on commission

We would rather spend an hour with you and sell you nothing than sell you the wrong thing. That is not a slogan — it is the only way a business like this survives on repeat custom and word of mouth.

What our customers say

Reviews left by our customers on Google, going back more than a decade, quoted as they wrote them.

Truly in love with this gang. Arranged my Motability, listened to my needs and came up with the goods. When I had problems they were on my doorstep as quickly as they could, left me with a replacement while they took mine away and fixed it.

Having just purchased our fourth scooter, this is just to state that over several years we have experienced excellent service and sales from David, Paul and other members of staff we don't see. We also experience good service for all our needs for sundries etc. We would be happy to recommend this company to anybody looking for good care and service for their mobility needs.

My husband popped in super early this morning as my electric wheelchair (purchased elsewhere) decided it wouldn't charge and we had plans today where it was needed. The two men working were amazing, they helped to get the battery back up and running again super quickly. They were very friendly and helpful and we really appreciate the help provided. Thank you. Would definitely recommend.

I've bought a couple of second-hand mobility scooters from The Mobility Centre over the years, as well as having them serviced and repaired, and the staff couldn't have been kinder or more helpful if they'd been members of my own family.

Went to the Mobility Centre with my Dad, 97 years young. He has just been told no more driving. Never looked at scooters before so it was a whole new experience. Good range and choice of scooters, all sizes and prices. The guys over there were brilliant. Spent time with us, went through everything, answered any questions. Totally recommend these guys. Brilliant service.

Our daughter was temporarily disabled and these guys loaned us a wheelchair free of charge. Now I don't know what anyone else thinks but that's what you call amazing. They are a business that sells but they have a heart. I am grateful to them and wish them every success.

Pete and the team are brilliant, they have rescued my scooter and left me with a replacement more than once, picking up and delivering to the house. They are friendly, relaxed and knowledgeable, if they can't help (which is unusual) then generally they can point you in the right direction. My boot scooter has been invaluable and is due to be replaced soon via Motability, which Pete and staff will deal with. Cannot recommend them highly enough.

I had an issue with my scooter which I didn't purchase from here. I rang up, spoke about it, came out today, fixed my tyre, was friendly and quick and even said to ring up if any problems, they will come out straight away. Honestly made me feel at ease. Well recommended.

Excellent service. They tested the batteries on my wife's scooter and replaced them in a few days. It's better now than ever before. Really chuffed.

Would like to thank the staff for quick service. My dad had a puncture, rang at 9:30am to report the problem. They were out and sorted in 2 hours. A1 service.
