One payment, everything covered

The Motability Scheme lets you exchange all or part of your mobility allowance for a brand-new mobility scooter or powered wheelchair. Rather than buying outright, you lease it — and the lease covers almost everything that would otherwise land as a separate bill.

Leases usually run for three years, and at the end of one you choose again.

  • Insurance against accidental damage and theft
  • Servicing, maintenance and repairs
  • Breakdown recovery, including at home
  • Tyre and battery replacement

What you get

What the lease includes

A brand-new scooter or powerchair

Exchange all or part of your mobility allowance for a new machine, chosen with you and fitted to how you actually live.

Insurance included

Cover for accidental damage and theft comes as part of the package, not as a separate bill.

Servicing and repairs

Routine servicing, maintenance and repairs are all covered for the length of the lease.

Breakdown recovery

Including at home — the place a scooter is most likely to let you down.

Eligibility

Am I eligible for the Motability Scheme?

You qualify if you receive one of these allowances, with at least 12 months of the award left to run.

  • Higher rate mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • Higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)
  • War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement
  1. You receive one of the qualifying mobility allowances — most often the higher rate mobility part of PIP.

  2. You have at least 12 months of that award left to run.

  3. Call us and we will arrange your free home assessment, then handle the paperwork with you.

Not sure whether you qualify? Ring us and we’ll talk it through — we handle the paperwork with you. The full scheme rules are on motability.co.uk.

How it works

What applying with us looks like

From the first phone call to the day the machine arrives.

  1. Have a chat

Ring us and tell us what you need. We will say straight away whether it looks like the scheme fits — we won't start an application that isn't going to be approved.

  2. Free home assessment

Where you meet the criteria we come to you, at no cost. Doorways, kerbs, the gate, where it will charge — the things a showroom visit can't answer.

  3. Choose your machine

Try what suits you. Many models are available with nothing to pay up front; some carry an advance payment, and we will tell you which before you decide.

  4. We handle the paperwork

We complete the application with you and keep you posted. Your allowance is paid across to Motability directly — nothing for you to arrange.

What is the Motability Scheme?

It lets you exchange all or part of your mobility allowance for a brand-new mobility scooter or powered wheelchair on an all-inclusive lease. Insurance, servicing, repairs, breakdown recovery and tyre and battery replacement are all included in the one payment.

Which benefits qualify?

The higher rate mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP), the higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP), or War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement. You need at least 12 months of your award left to run.

How long does the lease last?

Scooter and powered wheelchair leases usually run for three years, after which you can choose a new machine. Some complex powered wheelchairs run for longer.

Do I have to pay anything up front?

Many models are available with nothing to pay up front. Some carry an advance payment, which is a one-off contribution towards a more expensive machine. We will always tell you which applies before you commit to anything.

What happens to the rest of my allowance?

If your lease costs less than your full mobility allowance, the remainder keeps being paid to you as normal. You only exchange the part that covers the lease.

Can I try one before I apply?

Yes. Come into the Stewartby showroom and try several side by side, and where you meet the criteria we will come out to you for a free home assessment before anything is agreed.
